PTO Minutes 2020-02-10

Welcome: Crissy Field and Brittany Sullivan welcomed attendees to the meeting.

Treasurer’s Report: In Jan. we paid for Feb. assembly, field trip, science fair supplies, and printing expenses. We also provided snacks for the Parent Council Meeting and paid for the DJ for Family Fun Night. We netted $175 from the Winter Craft sessions (instead of losing money on the Secret Shop), had a very small check from Panera (Errors on their part, very disappointing), and started receiving Readathon donations.

Principal’s Remarks: Dr. Etlen thanked the PTO for sponsoring the science fair; the district shared his photos on social media. Highland did a presentation at the MLK Day of Service held at the Jr. High, Dr. Etlen was very proud of the students. We also donated about 20 boxes of shoes and clothing. Kindergarten registration just finished, it went a bit slowly this year, but having appointment times, as was suggested by a parent, would not have affected this years delays.

Review of Recent Events:

Family Fun Night: Karaoke dance party went well. We need a new chairperson and new ideas.

Science Fair: Lower participation than normal, possibly due to Thursday timing. Will move back to Friday going forward, as keeping the displays did not work out as well as hoped for.

Scholastic Book Fair: Proceeds were taken in Scholastic dollars and distributed to the librarian and teachers.

Other Business

Open positions: Co-President, Treasurer, Special Persons Dance, Box Tops Chair, Family Fun Nights Chair

Valentines Food Drive: Good amount has come in, will be picked up Friday (Gail will be in office)

Special Persons Dance: Friday the 21st. The DJ is hired, favors are purchased.

Spring Fling: A group from the Senior High will have an Alex’s Lemonade Stand, possibly with activities. For gift baskets the committee is planning to assign a theme to each grade for donations.

Red Cross Blood Drive: Need a chair to coordinate, Ken is going to reach out with questions concerning what is involved/timing.

Science Day: Van is currently gathering volunteers.

Zumba: Dates are set and approved, still considering a price change at Cindy’s request (Highland is charging less per student than other schools). PTO would like a sibling discount to be incorporated into a price change.

Apparel: We would like to have stock on hand year round, in a variety of sizes; both for event sales and for new students. Crissy or Brittany will reach out to Laura do discuss designs/inventory process.

Irun4Life: Natalie Black has taken on the Chair position with Mariella Hoffman assisting. Will be Friday afternoons for 8 weeks starting March 20. Enrollment capped at 50, parents have to register online.

Harlem Wizards: Flyer went out, one game this year, on March 28.

Assignment Books: Ordering less for the fall, as we have built up backstock. Unfortunately the less you order the more they cost, so it will not be a cost savings. Are delivered in late August, school office will open August 24.

**Please join us for our next meeting on March 16 at 6:30pm in the library.
